Students who clear the prelims are eligible to sit for the mains. The main exam consists of nine papers. Students can choose two optional subjects from a list of subjects provided by the UPSC. There will be two papers on each of the optional subject.

Agriculture is one of the optional subjects. There are two papers on it. The pattern of Paper I is given here. The exam is of duration of three hours and the maximum marks are 300. The questions are printed in both English and Hindi. Students have to specify the medium of answering before filing the application form. They cannot answer in any language other than the specified.
