The Indian Navy is one amongst the 3 defense forces of the Indian government. This is considered to be as one of the most challenging as well as high salaried jobs. The Government of India takes in aspirants into the Indian navy for the Senior Secondary Recruit. Currently, the Indian Navy is carrying out courses for interested candidates in February.

Courses for Joining the Navy

A candidate can get employed in the Indian navy either as an officer or in two other specific fields. They are Nautical Engineering and Marine. In order to become a sea farer, pre - sea courses are made available for candidates in institutions under the aegis of the Indian government or in private institutions.

Training Institutes in India:

There are four training institutes of the Indian government that provides both Pre-Sea as well as Post-Sea training. They methods of training will be of the international level. The names of the training institutes are given below.

• Lal Bahadur Shastri College of advanced Maritime Studies and Research, Mumbai.
• Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI), Kolkata.
• Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI), Mumbai.
• Training Ship Chanakya, Navi Mumbai.

Qualification to Joining the Navy as Officer

Students who desire to join the 3 year course in nautical science must have a pass in class 12. The same is applicable for students who would like to join the 4 year course in Marine engineering. Those who have diplomas in the appropriate fields can join the 2 years course. Graduates of mechanical engineering can join the one year course. In addition to this, students who have finished their class 10+2 can join the 3 month training course for Deck Cadets.

Qualification to join as utility hand or Petty Officers (Fitters)

Candidates who have finished their training in the 4 basic courses can join as petty officers or utility hand. e basic 4 courses are:

• Elementary First Aid (EFA)
• Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (FPFF)
• Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities (PSSR)
• Personal Survival Technique (PST)

Type of entry and its Qualification to Join Navy

Aspirants can join the National Defence Academy and the Executive Naval Academy by means of the UPSC. They must have a pass in class 12 with Mathematics and Physics. Only men are eligible to apply for this course. They must be atleast 16½ years when they apply. They must not be above 19 years. Candidates can join the Naval Academy by means of the Graduate Special Entry Scheme, the NCC Special Entry and Direct Entry methods.

As explained earlier, only men can apply for these courses. They are required to be graduates of Science or Engineering as to apply. Candidates who are entering through the direct entry must have degree in electronics, Mechanics or electronics. Those who have finished their post graduation in physics or electronics are also eleigible to apply. They must be no less then 19 years and not more than 25 years when they apply (22 years in the extreme in case of GSES). Those candidates who wish to join as executive or hydrograph department via the SSC must be graduates with a background in science. Only men can join and they must be atleast 19½ and no more than 25 years at the time of applying.

SSC Exam for Navy Recruitment

Candidates can join also by writing the SSC exam. Both men and women can apply for this. They must be atleast 19½ years and must not be above 25 years. They must have a 1st class in graduation in Mathematics and Physics. The same age criteria are applicable in the case of candidates who wish to join the Logistics Cadre. Men and women who have finished their graduation in streams of engineering like Mechanical, Electronics, Architecture and Marine engineering can join the LC. Men and women who wish to join the Law Cadre must have a degree in law. They are also required to be in between the ages of 22 and 27. Men who are graduates in Physics or Mathematics can apply for the Permanent Commission. They must be atleast 21 years when they apply. They should also not be above 25 years.
