Genetic engineering is one of the extremely complicated and modernized disciplines in science. This particular branch involves the study of a broad range of techniques that are used in altering the genetic material of a living organism. Genetic Engineering means the intentional modifications of the features of an organism by the manipulation of its genetic substances. The field generally comes under the broad section Biotechnology.
Genetic engineers are the professionals or the research scientists who work with the genes of either human, plants or animals. These professionals specialize in certain areas and look out for career in those specialized areas. They have plenty of opportunities in India as well as in overseas also.
Qualifying Exam
Those who wish to become genetic engineers or the research scientists need a doctoral degree in biological sciences. They must have specialized in any of the science subjects like botany, zoology, chemistry, biology or other related subjects at the undergraduate level and at the master’s level they should specialize in any of the fields such as genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, embryology or other biosciences or medical sciences. Usually for an entry level job in this field, candidates with at least a master’s degree in the related field is required.
Who is eligible to apply?
Those students who have completed their senior secondary education or equivalent with PCB from any reputed schools can apply for the bachelor’s degree programme in genetics or other related fields. There are numerous universities and institutions in the country which offers the genetics or related subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Admission of the eligible candidates for the courses will be based on the entrance examinations organized by the concerned university.
Key points in the process
- Pursue pass in the 10+2 examinations or equivalent with PCB under any recognized boards. Concentrate in the science subjects at this level.
- Join the university or institution which offers the undergraduate degree in genetics or related subjects and pursue it.
- Obtain admission to the master’s degree programme in the same and pursue it from any reputed graduate schools.
- Search for jobs in the related fields or pursue the doctoral degree in the same to gain high position jobs as genetic research scientists.

The genetic engineers need certain outstanding skills to carry out their work well in this field. Firstly they must have a strong background in the advanced science and technologies. In addition to these they must also have good analytical mind, research interests and laboratory skills.
