Sikkim, even though a small state, has got many prominent universities which offer courses in diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels in various fields such as engineering, medicine, dental, para medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, management, applied sciences, biotechnology, computing, law, architecture, commerce, fashion designing and so on.
In addition to the regular courses, the universities in Sikkim also provide its students with a provision of distance learning courses. All the universities there, by providing better campus facilities and meeting all other requirements of the students are trying to bring up the literacy rate higher than the present. These universities also have a placement cell and provide students with various placement oriented programmes so as to help the students pursue a bright career. Sikkim University, the central University established by the government of India came into existence in the year 2007. Numerous colleges offering BA, BSc, B.Com, B.Ed, M.Ed, B.Pharm, M.Pharm, LLB, LLM, etc are affiliated to the Sikkim University.
Sikkim Manipal University is the first government private initiative university in Sikkim. It was established under the Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences in the year 1995. The University is recognized by the University Grants Commission and approved by the Government of India. It provides the students with various courses such as engineering (including Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical & Electronics, Electronics & Communication, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Electronics & Instrumentation, Civil Engineering, and Bachelor of Architecture), medicine, management, applied sciences, nursing, physiotherapy and various other PhD courses. The University also provides various distance education courses in BA, MA, BBA, MBA, BCA, MCA, B.Com, M.Com, BSc IT, and so on.
The ICFAI University under the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India is recognized by UGC was established with a motive to become the top ranking private University for excellence in Higher Education and Research. The University provides various under graduate courses such as B.Tech, BBA, BCA, BHTM, BBA-LLB and also postgraduate courses such as MBA.
The EIILM University established under the Eastern Institute for Integrated Learning in Management University is the first University in the country to have been awarded the prestigious ISO 9001:14001 certification by UKAS. The University runs with a motive of providing international standard education in our nation.
Vinayaka Missions Sikkim University established by the Vinayaka Missions came into existence in the year 2008 with a motive to provide quality education in the field of Engineering, Architecture, Medical, Para Medical, Dental and so on.
