North Tripura is an administrative district in the Indian state of Tripura and the city of Kailasahar is the administrative headquarters of the district. It occupies an area of 2821 kms2 and the population of the district according to the census conducted in the year 2001 was 5,90,655. The district came into existence in the year 1970 on the 1st of September when the whole stat of Tripura was divided into three districts. The current North Tripura District has three sub-divisions namely Kanchanpur, Kailashahar and Dharmanagar.

The district of North Tripura has a literacy rate of 88.29% and the sex ratio of the district is 967 females out of every 1000 males. The district has three colleges each at three different subdivisions of the district. Government Degree College, Dharmanagar is one of the oldest colleges among the 15 government colleges functioning from the state of Tripura. The college is located in the district of North Tripura at a distance of about 159 kms from the capital of the state Agartala. The college has been in the forefront among the colleges in the state in advancement of education and other activities. The college came into existence in the year 1979 and it is offering courses in the faculties of arts, science and commerce and these degrees are conferred in different subjects.
