Difference between Dermatologist and Esthetician
Dermatologist and Esthetician are related, but different professions in skin care. Those who get involved in the diagnosis and treatment of problems affecting skin are referred to as Dermatologist. They apply both surgical and medical care in treatment of skin diseases. These professionals are also involved in prescribing medications and recommending skin products for the treatment of problems and disorders affecting skin. Estheticians on the other hand are mainly concerned with the healthy appearance of skin, hair, and nails. Those who work in Medicare centers in similar profiles are called as medical estheticians. They usually work under the direction of dermatologist in hospitals or other health care clinics.
Dermatologist and Opportunities
In order to become a specialist in dermatology the candidate has to undergo post graduate program in dermatology. Pass in MBBS degree from any of the medical colleges approved by MCI is the basic qualification required to pursue specialization courses in dermatology. Upon completion of the course, the candidate can find enough opportunities in any of the reputed hospitals or they can work as freelancers. They can also find opportunities outside the country with lucrative salary packages.
Esthetician and Opportunities
A graduate level degree or diploma course in cosmetology is the essential qualification required for the job of esthetician. Graduate and postgraduate courses in cosmetology are offered through several institutions in the country. The formal education helps them to gain theoretical and practical exposure to esthetics and cosmetology. In hospitals, they work under a dermatologist and provide suggestions on beauty care after surgery, radiations etc. They can also find opportunities with salons, resorts, fitness clubs or spas.
Key differences between Dermatologist and Esthetician
- Those who are involved in the medical treatment of skin diseases are referred to as dermatologist where as the job role of esthetician is to provide care for the healthy appearance to the hair, skin, and nails.
- The educational requirements for both the professions are much different. A postgraduate medical degree is required for the profession of Dermatologist where as graduation in beauty therapy or cosmetology is adequate for the job of Esthetician.
- Esthetician is mainly concerned with the beautiful appearance of skin where as Dermatologist usually gets involved with the health issues associated with the same.
Both dermatologist and esthetician require adequate educational qualifications and proficiency in work in order to excel in the profile.
