Eligibility and Exam Pattern for VBRET

Visva Bharati Research Eligibility Test (VBRET) is conducted to select suitable candidates to Ph.D in Education/Physical Education. Master degree holders in the concerned subject with a minimum of 55% marks can apply. There will be two sections for this entrance test, General Research Eligibility and Discipline Research Eligibility. General Research Eligibility is common to all candidates and comprises of questions on Environment, Reasoning, Information Technology, Research Methodology and Teaching Aptitude. Discipline Research Eligibility is based on the concerned subject.

Eligibility for VBRET

Master’s degree in the concerned subject (Education or Physical Education) from any of the recognized University is the basic qualification required. Required qualification must be obtained with a minimum of 55% marks. Candidates belonging to SC/ST category need to hold at least 50% marks for admission.

Exam Pattern for VBRET

VBRET is conducted as a 2 hour test. There will be two sections for this entrance test, General Research Eligibility and Discipline Research Eligibility. Out of a total of 100 questions, 25 questions will be asked from General Research Ability. Questions from this section carries 1 mark each. The section comprises of questions from the following topics.

  • Administration
  • Environment
  • Higher Education
  • Information Technology
  • Mass Communication
  • Numerical Statistics
  • Reasoning
  • Research Methodology
  • Series/Diagram
  • Sports Affairs
  • Teaching Aptitude

In Discipline Research Eligibility, there will be two papers. In Paper I, there will be 25 objective model questions. Syllabus for this paper is based on the following topics.

  • Philosophical Foundations of Education
  • Methodology of Educational Research
  • Psychological Foundations of Education
  • Application of Statistics in Education Research

Paper II of Discipline Research Eligibility contains three different sections. In Section I, there will be one essay model question carrying 15 marks. Section II, contains 5 questions and candidates are requested to choose any two out of this. Questions for this section carry 10 marks each and will be based on the following topics.

  • Education Administration and Management
  • Educational Measurement and Evaluation
  • Educational Technology
  • Special Education
  • Teacher Education

In Section III, there will be 5 questions in which candidates need to answer at least 3. Each question carries 5 marks.

Discipline Research Eligibility (DRE) for Physical Education is slightly different from that for DRE in Education (mentioned above). Though the exam patterns of both the subjects’ are same, they do differ in exam syllabus.

Each candidate needs to score at least 40% marks in General Research Eligibility to qualify. Only those candidates who have qualified this section will be evaluated for Discipline Research Eligibility. In order to pass VBRET, aspirant need to score a minimum aggregate of 50% marks in both the sections.
