can i apply for GATE exam now i am in b.tech 3rd year plz tell me

The eligibility criteria for GATE exam , from where you can get details information:

*The following categories of candidates are eligible to appear in GATE :

>> Bachelor degree holders in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture (4 years after 10+2) and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.

>> Master degree holders in any branch of Science/ Mathematics/ Statistics/ Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.

>> Candidates in the second or higher year of the Four-year Integrated Master degree programme (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/ Technology or in the third or higher year of Five-year Integrated Master degree programme and Dual Degree programme in Engineering/ Technology.

>> Candidates with qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE (e.g. AMIE by IE(I), AMICE(I) by the Institute of Civil Engineers (India)-ICE(I)) as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. Those who have completed section A or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.

No. you can not apply for GATE while in B.Tech. 3rd year but earlier it was possible but now you are only eligible to apply for GATE in the final year of your B.Tech. studies.

GRADUATE APTITUDE TEST IN ENGINEERING(GATE), is an entrance exam conducted by IIT and Indian Institute of Science jointly for admission to M.Tech. courses after completion of B,Tech.

The eligible candidate must be an Indian national having either appear for the final B.Tech. exam or pass in any stream of engineering from a recognised University, is eligible to apply for GATE. There is neither any upper age restriction nor any restriction on number of attempts to GATE.

Unfortunately you can not apply for the GATE Exam as of now. You need to be final year candidate or must have passed the B.Tech course in order to appear for the General Aptitude Test for Engineering.


I believe that B.Tech 3rd year is good time to start preparing for the GATE Exam. Since you are in third year, you should have got a proper idea of the stream you are studying therefore it would be perfect time to start preparing for the GATE Exam.


In any case, it requires a lot of effort to achieve good marks in the GATE Entrance exam. By giving yourself enough time to prepare for GATE, you would prevent any sort of mental strain which you may experience in case of not giving sufficient time for preparing the exam.


The good way to prepare for the GATE Exam is by opting for the coaching classes. Find the best coaching center in your city and take admission if you can afford it. In case you can't then prepare all by yourself my following some of the advice below.


1. It is important for you to familiarise yourself with the exam. It can be done by looking into previous years question papers. This would give you some idea about what kind of questions are asked in the GATE Exam.

2. You should buy books related to your course for the GATE. It would depend on what stream you belongs to. There are several good GATE books to prepare for the exam. These books would definitely help you prepare better.


3. Like I mentioned earlier, give yourself realistic timeframe to prepare for the GATE Exam. At present you can start with 2-3 hours per day. You can increase the daily study hours when exam time approaches.


4. After every few days of preparing, take the mock tests or solve the previous years question papers in the same duration as allocated for the GATE Exam. This would help you understand the areas where you are not performing well.


5. An important thing to remember is that in GATE exam not every single subjects gets equal marks. Some subjects gets priority over the others. It is important to find these subjects.


6. There are total of 65 questions in GATE exam worth of 100 marks. Out of which 30 marks are given to questions related to Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude while 70 marks are given to questions related to your engineering subjects.


7. There is negative marking in the GATE exam however not for the numerical type questions.
