For 10+2 students there are the following courses available.

1.3 year degree course in Nautical Science (Institutions : TS Chanakya (Through IIT-JEE, Southern Academy of Maritime Studies (Chennai), Vels Academy of Maritime Education & Training (Chennai), Vels Academy of Maritime Education & Training (Chennai))

After 12th, Yes you can join merchant navy as a deck cadet. In merchant navy there
are two kinds of officers, Deck Officer and Engineering Officers. So, There are four Government Training Institutes which providing Pre-Sea and Post-Sea training of international standard -

Training Ship Chanakya, Navi Mumbai.
Marine Engineering & Research Institute, Kolkata.
Marine Engineering & Research Institute, Mumbai.
Lal Bahadur Shastri College of advanced Maritime Studies and Research, Mumbai.

i am 12 passed with 50% in pcm.which college can i look for merchant navy?

after giving the 12th board you have to appear for the entrance exam conducted by different institutes.........but now all the dates for the form submission is already over..........

if you have appeared for the IIT JEE exam and scored good marks then you may get into chanakya institute..........

Hello Rahul,
First of all, you should select the field of merchant engineering, I mean, you may either join the navigation department or the engineering field of Merchant Navy and you must have Physics, Chemistry and Maths as main stream combination to be eligible for Merchant navy.

If you want to join the navigation department, then you need to take up Nautical science in your bachelor programme and if interested in the engineering job in Merchant Navy, then Marine engineering.

After graduating in nautical science, you can join Merchant navy as deck cadet where as the post of Junior engineer is offered to a Marine engineer.

For admission in the institutes for these courses, you will need to qualify the entrance exams such as IIT JEE.

Fololowing are the institutes offering these courses

1. Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI) P - 19m Taratolla Road, Kolkata - 700 088.

2. Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI) Hay Bunder Road, Mumbai - 400 033.

3. Ministry of Surface Transport (Govt. of India) Directorate General of Shipping, "Jahaz Bhavan", Ballard Estate, Opp. Indira Dock (Red Gate),Watched Hirachand Marg, Mumbai - 400 038.

4. TS Chanakya, Karaus, New Bombay - 400 706.

Apart from going for these courses, there is also a provision for direct entry. since you want to join merchant navy just after +2, you can join merchant navy as deck cadet and after 3 years of service, you may appear for exam conducted by Directorate General of Shipping for further promotion.

there is differenet way to enter in the merchant navy,

it is also based on the 12th,but for that you must have mathematics in 12th as a one of the subjects.

and you can also go for the merchent navy after the graduation.

How to get in Merchant Navy

For getting into Deck or Navigating department one has to start there career from post of "Deck Cadet" after that one will moves toward Third Officer which ultimately leads to Captain/Master in long time of 8-10 years work experiance.

Qualification Required: One has to persue 3 years B.sc (Nautical science) alongwith 12 months of onship training. Or these days this B.sc degre gets split into parts by maximum institutes such that- 1 year Diploma in Nautical science, 1 1/2 years Onboard ship training and 6 months pre-sea training.



Eligibility: 12th (PCM) with at least 60% aggregate. However, few Institutes also accept students with 55% aggregate. For Ex- Trident college of marine technology, West Bengal.

Age Limit: 20 years for those who has +2, while its 22-23 years for B.sc Dgree holder.

For Getting into Engine Department, one has to start career from the post of "Fifth or Junior Engineer" which ultimately lead to Chief Engineer.

Qualification Required: A degree in Marine or Mechanical or electrical Engineering from a recognised Institute. MArine engineering holder will get in directly while Mechanical and Elecrical has to undergone 10 months Pre-Sea Training in MArine engineering, which is either offered by recruiting company or candidate has to born itself.


Eligibility: Nothing different from what is required to be an Engineer.

Age Limit: 25 years

For Rating Department

For Deck Rating: Any bachelor degree(as it is prefered) with 1 year or 6 months pre-sea training.

Age Limit: 21 and 23 years.

Engine Rating: Diploma in Mechanical Engineering alongwith 12 or 6 months pre-sea training.

Age Limit: 21 years.

Catering Rating: Any background will do. However, background in hotel management with experience in the hospitality business will be a great help.
In this field you need to upgrade your skills every nine months or so, through proficiency development or skill development courses in the maritime academies and pass examinations conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS). This will be your key to new contracts.

Age Limit: 25 years for MBA holders.

Marine Engineering Research Institute : It was earlier known as the directorate of Marine Engineering, offers marine engineering education. Headquartered at Calcutta, it has a branch in mumbai too.

There are few private institute imparting training and various courses to enable youngster to take up a career in sea.Some of these institute are:-

To join merchant navy after 10+2 u need to give an entrance exam. After being selected u'll be shortlisted and according to ur rank u can apply for the colleges.
u will be appointed as deck cadet and promotions goes after.

The minimum qualifications is 12th pass with 60% in physics, chemistry and mathematics. There are so many colleges in India. some of them are
1.Tolani Maritime Institute, Pune
2.Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies, Mumbai.
3.Indian Meritime University, Chennai.

Or if you want to go abroad, you can opt for Singapore or UK. These are some of the countries where they provide better facilities.

After passing 12 class you can join merchant navy as GPR ( Genral Purpose Rating) for which six months G P Rating couse is available in most of the private institution. 12th Passouts can also join as Deck cadet but for this course we msut have 55% in PCM, so unfortunately you are not eligible for Deck Cadet course.

For Deck Cadet course, you must be a 12th passout with aggregate of 55% marks in PCM and 50% marks in Engkish either in 10th or 12th class.
BSc. graduates with aggregate of 55% marks in final year can also join merchant navy as deck cadet...........

it will better for you if you join merchant navy after 12th.

if you join merchant navy after 12th through NDA exam, then it will be best option for you.

if you join army through NDA exam, then you will get good post in merchant navy.

Hi,
You can join merchant navy as a deck cadet on board a ship after completing 10 + 2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and train on the job for three years.

After the on-job training you have to appear for the competency examination, as required by the Union Ministry of Surface Transport, to be eligible to become a Navigation Officer.

yes you join merchant navy with 55% in 12 standard....

but u r not able to join merchant navy with deck cadet ...but u also have chance with GP Rating and with advanced Course............
