Graduation is the minimum educational qualification for IAS examination. You can select any subject as per your interest for graduation. However, most of the students choose history for graduation. There will be questions from the optional subject selected by the candidates. The examination is conducted by UPSC.

As you are interested to appear in UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) Civil Services Examination, you can choose between a wide range of subjects offered to be chosen as an Optional for Mains Written stage.
Earlier a candidate had to choose two optional subjects but now only one optional subjects needs to be chosen among various subjects. Basic eligibility for UPSC: • You must be an Indian • You must have completed your graduation. Candidates in their final year of college can also apply • You must have attained 21 years of age. Stages of exam: Preliminary Mains (Written with Optional subject to be chosen) Interview Compulsory Subjects: General Studies : 4 papers of 250 marks each Essay : 250 marks ( in any language ) English : 300 marks (qualifying) Hindi : 300 marks (qualifying) Subjects available to be chosen for Optional: For science students: Physics Chemistry Mathematics Medical Science Botany Agriculture Animal husbandry and veterinary science Statistics Zoology Geology Anthropology For engineering streams: Civil engineering Mechanical engineering Electrical engineering For commerce stream: Commerce Management Other popular subjects: Geography Public administration Indian History Economics Political science Philosophy Psychology Sociology Law UPSC also provides to choose optional subject from Indian languages like Hindi, Bengali, Punjabi, English, Assamese, Urdu, Gujarati, Malayalam, Kannad, Manipuri, Sanskrit, etc. For further information, you can visit : http://www.upsc.gov.in |
