Getting into Indian Police Service through UPSC Competitive Examination
UPSC conducts Indian Police Service Competitive Examination with an objective of filling up various vacancies in the Indian Police Service. The details regarding the conduct, selection procedure and schedule of exam are briefed in this article.
Selection Procedure for UPSC IPS Competitive Exam
The first step of selection will be a written test. For the candidates who will clear the first round there will be a face to face personal interview.
The written test includes 5 papers. The first two papers will be of objective type and the last 3 sections will be descriptive. The duration of the objective type papers will be 2 hours in total and that of descriptive ones will be 3 hours. 200 marks are given for each of the papers.
The first paper will be related to History, Geography and Current events. The second paper will be related to interpersonal skills and also reasoning. The third paper will be based on English proficiency; forth an essay paper and the last one will be based on general studies. The third paper is meant for qualifying purpose only.
Qualification required to apply for UPSC Indian Police Service Competitive Examination
Applicants must be citizens of India. They must have successfully completed 5 years of continuous and also actual service in any of the following positions:
- Deputy Superintendent of Police under State Police Service
- Assistant Commandants in Central Reserve Police Service
- Assistant Commandants in Border Security Force
- Assistant Commandants in Indo Tibet Border Police
- Assistant Commandants in Central Industrial Security Force or Sashastra Seema Bal
- Officers of the rank of Captain
- Major equivalent in the armed forces
Applicants must be having unblemished service record to apply for this exam.
Maximum age of the applicant as per rules can be 35 years. There will be age relaxation of 1 year for OBC candidates. For SC/ST candidates the age relaxation will be 2 years.
Maximum permitted number of attempts for this exam will be 2 times. In the case of OBC candidates and SC/ST candidates it will be 3 times.
Candidate must also hold a degree from any recognized University as well.
Application Procedure for UPSC Indian Police Service Competitive Examination
The application for this exam can be submitted online at http://www.upsconline.nic.in. No mandatory columns in the application must be left blank as it may lead to rejection of the application. The print out of the same along with necessary certificates must be send to Secretary, Union Public Service Commission, Dholpur House, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi – 110069 before the last date mentioned. The envelope header must be “Application for Indian Police Service Limited Competitive Examination”. The application can also be submitted directly to Union Public Service Commission counter.
