A database administrator shortly called as DBA is responsible for managing, maintaining, and organizing the data pertaining to an organization. In the recent years, the job description of this position has broadened to include security management, system analysis and proactive tuning. Candidates appointed for this position becomes a vital member in the team of IT in most of the organizations. These professionals, come under the pay scale of Rs.19400-700/1-20100-800/10-28100 in government organizations and banks in India. However, some government organizations pay on consolidated pay basis for the position of Database Administrator.

Difference in pay scale:

Even though, Canara Bank announced the above-mentioned pay scale for this position, Delhi University offered a consolidated pay of Rs.15000-20000 per month and Bharat Electronics Limited Rs.12000 per month.

Educational Qualification requirement:

If a candidate is interested in applying for the position of Database Administrator, he/she must have completed Bachelor of Engineering/Technology in information technology, electronics or computer science or MCA or any other educational qualification with a certificate course completion certificate on RDBMS.

Experience requirement:

Government organizations require that candidates must have at least 2-3 years of experience in design and development of web based applications like JAVA, PHP, ASP.Net, ASP, etc… it is also required that the candidates must be well-versed in SQL server and database management and weightage will be given to Oracle-certified candidates. Candidates with exposure towards latest data development tools like normalization, advance queries and ER modeling can further earn weightage as compared to other candidates applying for the same position in government organizations.

Selection Procedure:

Normally, candidates are shortlisted based on their educational qualification and experience and then shortlisted candidates alone are called for attending the interview.

Typical job responsibilities of a Database Administrator:

Candidates appointed for the position of DBA will have to test, analyze and establish computer databases to meet the requirements of the organization for which they are appointed. They will be designing the business intelligence and data warehousing platforms and tunes and consolidates database for optimal efficiency. They are responsible for making sure that the data is defined in such a way that any user can easily access and understand it.

Work Atmosphere:

Database Administrators are appointed in labs and offices and they will have to spend most of their time in front of the computers. They will have to work on database that contain sensitive information and therefore they might be required to work extra hours for ensuring the security of crucial data by conducting tests and troubleshooting in the case of any risk to the security of the data.

Job tasks assigned to Database Administrator:

Database Administrators are entrusted with the responsibilities like preparing, arranging and approving the installation of new software products. They will be required to test the computer databases and programs before installation and will also have to perform testing at regular intervals to ensure safety of data. In the case of any error in the database, he will be responsible for fixing those errors and ensuring smooth running of data.
