The English and Foreign Languages University came into existence in the year 1972 in the name of Central Institute of English and Foreign Language and the university holds the pride of being one among the central universities in the country. In addition to the main campus at Hyderabad, the university also has campuses at Shillong and Lucknow.

The university offers for the study of English and Foreign languages and their literatures, extension services, production of teaching materials, training of teachers, organizing of research, etc… with a view to improve the standards of teaching the foreign languages and English in India. The university is the only university of its kind in the country, working wholly for offering education in English and several other foreign languages.
