English and Foreign Languages University, Lucknow
It was as old as the first prime minister of India who gave the establishment to CIE or The Central Institute of English, as it was known then in 1958 but as the time went on in April 1972, the institute moved a step ahead to include the major foreign languages of the world and hence so it was named as The Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages or CIEFL. Moving on it was in July 1973, that the institute received the ultimate standard of becoming a university. It was then that the UGC granted it the title of a deemed university.
Shortly after it became a university, it opened its regional centers to properly distribute its administrative and other activities. The two centers that opened were that in Shillong in 1974 and the one in Lucknow in 1976. The university meanwhile added to its course list new names like M. Lit and PhD programs. Distance education was also started in the university after the introduction of correspondence courses of these languages in 1974. Other major advancement in the university came with the introduction of MA program in 2000 for various fields like English language, phonetics, English literature etc.
The Lucknow campus of the university is situated on the river banks of Gomti and resides very well in the Moti Mahal campus in the Rana Pratap Marg. The university here actually started in 1979 providing training for teachers of English in northern India but then again it has emerged as a professional center conduction PG Diploma in English along with degrees and research. The courses also include a PG Diploma in Communication. The courses in the Lucknow center are all regular ones; they are not available in the distance education mode.
The university is strengthen by its facilities like a unique library and its own Hostels with other facilities like Electronic Reading Center for people with special needs, a well equipped computer lab, a multimedia lab offering digital language learning software, special language labs with audio books and language disks.
