IPS Officer - How to become an IPS Officer?
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) recruitment is rigorously based on the candidate’s performance in the Civil Services Examination. The Indian Police Service is one of the three most desirable services in India. The IPS is not a law enforcement agency. It is a group to which high ranked police officers belong to. They could be working for the police force, the CBI, CID, etc.
Qualifying Exam
A Civil Services aspirant has to apply for the exam as and when the notification for exam appears in all leading dailies, the Gazette of India and in the Employment News. It also published in the official website of UPSC. The application form along with the information brochure is available at post offices or head post offices across the country. Correctly filled up application form and the acknowledgement card should to be sent to The Secretary, Union Public Service Commission, Dholpur address.
The exam has three phases
- Preliminary exam
- Main exam
- Interview
There two parts to the preliminary exam. Both are objective in nature. May or June months are normally the months when they are conducted. The first paper deals with General Studies and the second one with the selected optional subjects. (A list of optional subjects will be available in the information brochure). The main exam is held in October-November. It has a total of nine papers. The first paper is on English and the second an Indian language. The third is an essay paper. The fourth and fifth are on general studies. The last four are on the two selected subjects. There are two papers on each of the selected subjects. The interview happens in April-May for which the calls are sent out in March-April.
Who is eligible to apply?
- The candidate has to be an Indian citizen.
- The candidate should be between the ages of 21 and 30 as on 1st of August of the year of examination. There are relaxations in the upper age limit in cases like SC/ST, OBC candidates, etc.
- The candidate should be at least a degree holder from any university in the country. Final year students, awaiting results are also eligible.
- Candidates belonging to the general category can take the exam only four times. It is 7 in the case of OBCs and there is no limit for SC/STs.
How to prepare for exam and interview?
Reading the news papers and magazines, and listening to the news is important. The candidate needs to keep in mind that no news is unimportant. Materials like Competition Success Review will also help. Make good use of the dictionary. These will help to tackle English language and general awareness papers. Select optional subjects very carefully. Refer the brochure when doing so. There are certain combinations that are not allowed. Also select subjects that you know well. For the essays paper, keep in mind the topic. Do not stray away from it.
Interviews are conducted to analyze the personality of the candidate. Be modest, honest and respectful towards the panel. Understand the question well. Give unbiased and precise answers. Do not be argumentative. Be alert. Mock interviews will help. Practice and focus are important for preparation.
