Teaching is regarded as profession which is very respectful in its nature. The career gives in full responsibility and authority involved in developing the knowledge of the students on a whole. Since the need for quality education is increasing in the country, this as a profession is in huge demand. The career in itself is very demanding nowadays as the benefits associated with this profession are immense.

The role of a teacher is somewhat equal to a parent because they are the individuals who guide the students in areas of learning as well as different decisions concerning their career. The fundamental value system that a student acquires is through the teachers who teach them. Teaching should be taken as a career by only those individuals who have a passion towards that as a profession. The candidates should be good at communicating the ideas which they intend to the students.

The demand for individuals who have taken this as a career is increasing in the country. This is a career which is challenging in its own respect. The students need to be explained in detail using examples etc regarding a particular concept which he/she is not aware off. This is a job where in high level of patience is certainly essential. Teachers act as motivators for the students to learn new concepts. The teacher is only a facilitator where in it is the students who need to conduct a self assessment regarding the abilities and get the information’s necessary for a particular study.

Teaching – Qualities to be stressed

Individuals involved in this profession should have the ability to adjust with all the types of people. The major need being that the candidates should have a solid subject knowledge which should be imparted tothe students. The individuals should be ready to take on responsibility in this area.

One of the significant aspect because of which this career is being increasingly adopted by many of the individuals is related to an interest in a particular subject area, professional and secured career etc. Many retired professionals from any particular area can also adopt this as a career. Another important skill which a teacher needs to have is good communication skill. This is the base for this profession. Even if the candidates possess adequate skills and expertise, if they lack in the communication side it will not be a success. The success of a teacher lies where he/she will be in a position to deliver information regarding a particular subject which is boring in the most interesting manner.

The teachers should have a great liking towards a subject and should motivate the students to learn the subjects which are they have no interest in.

Where the teaching Career will take you?

Regarding the question where a teaching career will take a person – it all depends on the qualification of the individuals. In India, the degree related to the teaching should be taken from a recognized university or college within the country. There are different sections in teaching namely- primary/high school, higher secondary schools etc. It all depends on ones interest and level of qualification that one would reach a certain position.

An individual can engage in pre primary teaching by taking the NIT course which is conducted by various vocational training centers and poly technical colleges. The minimum eligibility for adopting this level of teaching is 12th class or intermediate studies. A primary level teacher should have completed the diploma or bachelor in education. The candidates having a home science degree can also apply for the primary level teacher’s job.

The candidates who have pursued their graduation in any discipline from any university or a college which is recognized can become a teacher only after having a B.Ed degree. Those are called TGT (Trained Graduate Teachers) who can teach in the senior secondary level. There are PGT (Post graduate Teachers) who can teach up at higher levels in different schools. Such candidate should take the M.Ed degree after post graduation for getting in to teaching jobs.

A good academic record is essential for a candidate to pursue teaching as a job in higher universities and colleges. The candidate should have at least a 55% of marks in the subject in which they are specialized in at the master’s level. By attending the NET (National Eligibility test) conducted by the UGC/CSIR etc. Those who pass in NET will be eligible to apply for the position of Lecturers in university or college level.  The benefits associated in this area are immense.

The job prospect of teaching as a career is very significant. The candidates who get engage in this area have flexible timings in this job. Moreover the numbers of opportunities are high especially in various governments as well private schools and colleges. The pay package is also fairly high particularly in case of UGC scale teachers.

The role of teachers in any society cannot be ignored as the whole culture and value system of the people depends on that link only. In India, many steps are being taken to improve the level of education in the rural areas. The education sector is expanding and in various levels as a result of which the need for more professionally qualified and skilled teachers is increasing. Hence the government has built in more steps to generate more number of people in this profession.

The number of schools and colleges are increasing both in public and private sectors. Hence the demand for qualified teachers is also there. Faculties are a requirement in all the areas. As a part of the development initiatives, the government has introduced the concept of virtual classrooms in schools and colleges. The role of IT in teaching is a significant one. The burden of teachers in this area has been reduced with the introduction of Computers which help in various teaching techniques. Hence adequate training should be imparted to the teaching staff to effectively do their work.
