The salary package offered to Air Force Officers will be based on their rank and branch. While the officers in the flying branch will be paid a gross monthly emolument of Rs 59,466 and in the technical branch Rs 50,716. The officers in ground duty branch will receive a monthly emolument of Rs 48,216. Even before being officially commissioned to the service, trainees in their final year of training at the various Air Force Training Institutions are entitled for a monthly stipend of Rs 21,000.

Salary packages and Allowances

Commissioned Air Force officials are offered a basic pay of Rs 15,600 per month, which is common to all branches. Grade pay is Rs 5,400 per month. A monthly military service pay of Rs 6000 is also applicable to flying officers. A kit maintenance allowance of Rs 500 per month as well as transport allowance of Rs 3200 for major cities and Rs 1600 for other cities is provided. In addition to to these, officers are paid 58% dearness allowance which amounts to Rs 15,660 per month. Officers in the flying branch are given additional Flying Allowance at Rs 11250 per month. Also a monthly technical allowance of Rs 2500 is given to technical branch officers.

Gross monthly emoluments differ with rank. While the Flight Lieutenant receives a monthly emoluments of Rs 49,738 Squadron Leader receives Rs 58,713. Wing Commander, Group Captain and Air Commodore receives Rs 86,768/-, Rs 99,345/-and Rs 1,04,443/- respectively.

The flying pay admissible for flying officer is Rs 11,250. Flight Lieutenant gets Rs 13,750 /- and a Squadron Leader gets Rs 17,500/-. A Wing Commander gets a flying pay of Rs 17,500/- while a Group Captain and Air Commodore & above gets Rs 17,500/- and Rs 13,125/- respectively.  A monthly technical allowance of Rs 2500 is applicable for Tier-I course and Rs 3750 for Tier-II course.

Allowances will also depend on the place of posting and nature of duty. The following allowances are applicable other than the normal allowances:

  • Hard area allowance
  • Siachen allowance
  • High altitude allowance
  • Field area allowance
  • Remote locality allowance
  • Special compensatory (hill area) allowance
  • Island special duty allowance
  • Special force allowance
  • Test pilot & flight test engineer allowance

Additional perks

Along with these standard pay and allowances, Air Force officers are also provided with accommodation depending on the rank. Insurance Cover of Rs 30,00,000 at low premium rates is provided. 20 days of casual leave and an annual leave of 60 days with liberal leave travel concessions and loans are given as additional perks. The Air Force also provides comprehensive medical facilities as well as specialist services. Various facilities including recreation, education, canteen, rations, higher studies opportunities are also given to the Air Force officers.

Air Force provides comprehensive post retirement benefits for its retired Air Force officials. These includes a life insurance coverage, access to medical facilities with a lifetime medical insurance and reimbursement of medical bills, scholarships for handicapped children and children of airmen, a senior citizen home at New Delhi and a placement cell for those retired officials seeking an active service life.
