National Law University is the competent authority which conducts AILET for selecting candidates in either B.A LLB (Hons)/LLM /PhD courses. The format of entrance exam for specific courses varies. Candidates can get detailed information about the format of the entrance exam from university website.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates can apply for any of the following courses after qualifying All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) –

B.A LLB (Hons) – Candidates after completing 12th class are eligible to apply for 5 year Integrated B.A LLB (Hons) course. It is compulsory to attain at least 50% marks in the final examination in order to apply for this course. 21 years is the minimum age limit for this course.

LLM – LLB graduates with 55% marks become eligible to apply for LLM course. Candidates who are studying final year LLB graduation can also submit application for LLM course provided they complete the course within the month of April/May 2013.

PhD – Post graduation in Law is essential to apply for PhD course. 55% marks in LLM is a prerequisite in order to study PhD course.

Exam Pattern of All India Law Entrance Test (AILET)-2013

The pattern of All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) consists of objective type and essay type questions. The subject areas covered in AILET will vary as per the different courses candidates choose.

B.A LLB (Hons) course – The entrance exam for joining B.A LLB course includes the following sections –

• General English -35 marks
• Current Affairs -35 marks
• Legal Aptitude -35 marks
• Reasoning -35 marks
• Elementary Mathematics -10 marks
• Total number of questions – 150 questions
• Time Limit – 1 hour 30 minutes

LLM course – The written exam for joining LLM course consists of multiple choice as well as essay type questions. Total marks specified for this entrance examination is 150 marks which needs to be completed within a time limit of 90 minutes. The objective type section covers 100 questions from following subject areas like –

• Legal Theory
• Law of Torts
• Law of Contracts
• Criminal Law
• Constitutional Law

There will also be an essay type questions for 50 marks relating to the topic of Law.

PhD course – Those candidates having cleared either UGC NET/SLET/JRF or who have a M.Phil qualification need not attend the entrance examination. On the other hand, the written examination involves two main parts which is as follows –

Part 1 - Research Methodology

• Objective type questions – 100 questions
• Total marks – 100 marks
• Time limit – 1 hour 30 minutes

Part 2 – Research Proposal Specific Paper

In Part -2, candidates are expected to present a research paper (about 15 pages) relating to any specific topic on which candidates are interested to pursue law studies. The total marks allotted for this Part -2 research paper is 100 marks. Candidates must compulsorily score 50% marks in this section to get a chance to take part in the final selection steps. Candidates should mandatorily make a verbal presentation to the Doctoral committee as a final part of entrance exam.
