Re: Can I do Journalism course after graduation? Qualification required to become a Journalist?
Dear friend,
Eligibility for Journalism : - The minimum Educational Qualification required to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism is the successful completion of the 10+2 or equivalent level of education. Although some universities teach Journalism at the Undergraduate Level, the subject is vastly taught at the Postgraduate level in our country. Graduates of any stream are eligible to opt for Journalism Courses. A Journalism degree or a diploma isn’t strictly necessary, although some organisations prefer it. There is no substitute for Practical Training. However, a Postgraduate degree or Diploma in Journalism or Mass Communication is necessary, if one wishes to join, later in one’s career, at different levels in the Indian Information Service or the different State Government information services. It can also help one to shift to a teaching career in Journalism Institutes. Entrance Examinations for Journalism Admission into institutes offering courses in Journalism are held during May – July every year. The Entrance Test generally includes a Written Test ( Comprising Objective and Subjective Questions ) and is followed up with Group Discussion and Personal Interview. One should have a good command over current affairs in order to qualify in these entrance tests. Journalism Aptitude : Hard Work, Willingness, and Capacity to Learn, Teamwork and Effective Communication Skills are Important for growth in this field. Belief in oneself, coupled with the ability of not taking oneself too seriously, will definitely take one places. Creativity is the most prized skill in this industry. This skill integrated with excellent Communication Skills and Good Flair, of Writing and Organising thoughts is most sought by the companies. The ability to segregate relevant from irrelevant facts is also desirable. One should have good command over language ( Written and Oral ) and above all, a nose for news. Immense confidence in one’s ability is a prime requisite in this field and one should also have the ability to remain Cheerful in difficult Situations. CPT Online Practice Test Journalism Courses in India : A large number of Institutes and Media Schools across the country offer courses in Print and Broadcast Journalism, as well as in advertising and Public Relations. Diploma Courses, Bachelor’s degree courses and Postgraduate Degree Courses in Journalism or Mass Communication are available at these Institutes. Moreover, one can also undergo specialized Training and partake of Internships at reputed Media Organisations in order to increase one’s career – prospects. Students of Journalism are tutored extensively on different Writing Styles in Reporting – News, Features, Reviews, etc. Report Writing has its Own Language; some Words and Phrases are extensively used, some are less used and some are never used at all. Further, Paragraphing, Writing an Introduction for a lead story or an Anchor, Script Writing for Radio or Television and Feature Writing are generally part of the syllabi for most reporting courses. One is also prepared to walk on the rough road of actual news hunting in these courses – How to Cultivate Sources, How to get a Quote out of a Difficult Politician, Official or Bureaucrat, etc. A month or two of internship with a Newspaper or Television house is compulsory and now forms an important part of the Practical Training. This gives one a fair idea of the real Reporting Scene. Training is always Theoretical as well as practical. For example, a course called Covering Deprivation is included in the syllabi of Asian School of Journalism. In this Journalism course, students are taken on field trips to deprived areas where they try to gather information on many aspects. Disciplines at an Institute of Mass Communication :
Several courses relating to different areas of Mass Communication, which are of varying durations, are available at institutes and universities across the country. Journalism Course Institutes :
Diploma Courses in Journalism and Mass Communication are available at the Xavier Institute of Communication in Mumbai ( Maharashtra ). The Film and Television Institute of India at Pune offers Diploma and Certificate courses in all aspects of film and Television – Production. The TV Today Media Institute in New Delhi offers a Postgraduate course in Television Reporting, Copy Writing and News Production. Journalism Career Prospects : Journalism Career prospects are very bright for the candidates with professional degree in Journalism under their belts. The Indian Media and Entertainment sector is expected to cross a turnover of Rupee 1,00,000 crore by 2011 from Rupee 43,700 ( the present turnover ). This refers to the increase in the skilled manpower. According to the Knowledge Management division of ABC Consultants estimates, the demand for manpower in this sector has grown ten folds in two years. Only the TV channels require at least 10,000 – 12,000 entry – level recruits in the next 2 – 3 years. A large number of Newspapers and Magazines mark their presence in the Indian Media World. So to Conclude you can Definitely Do Journalism. All The Best |
