Sir/Mam, I want to know how to get entry in merchant navy after b-tech mechanical engineering and which college is good for doing the better course for graduate mechanical engineers.

You can get entry into the adventerous world of Merchant Navy after completion of Mechanical Engineering. However I would like to point out that if your intention purely in job in Merchant Navy then instead of Mechanical Engineering you should opt for the Marine Engneering.


Both courses are 4 years long and the admission process is almost the same. The advantage of doing Marine Engineering would be that you will be able to apply for some good top officer level jobs after this course. However there are also good jobs for Mechanical Engineers in the Merchant Navy but my point is that why not do a course which is related to Merchant Navy considering it would provide better score. You will be spending same time in Mechanical and Marine Engineering.



Eligibility

1. A Bachelor degree is Nautical Science or the Marine Engineering.

2. You need to compelte 12th with PCM as the subjects.

3. The age limit is 20 years.

4. Ther is 5 years relaxation in age limit for SC/ST.

5. Only unmarried Male and Female candidates can apply.

6. You will have to pass a medical test.


Apart from that there will be some physical requirements like 6/6 vision with no color blindness. Your height should be at least 150 cm etc.



Direct Entry

There is a possibility to get direct entry into Merchant Navy. Candidates who have completed 12th with PCM can apply for Deck Cadets job.


Those who have completed B.Tech in Mechanical/ Electrical/ Technology can directly apply for jobs like Cadet/ Fifth Engineer/ Junior Engineer.

If you decide to do Mechanical Engineering and then applied for direct job, you will have to go through 9 months long Pre-sea course in Marine Engineering from MERI.



In that case you will first have to compelted Mechanical Engineering. To do so you will have to appear for ISEET entrance exam which would be conducted next year. The result of this exam is accepted in the top colleges of India that are IITs and NITs. You should seek admsision in any of these colleges.

In Merchant Navy after completion of class 10, you can join after doing the Deck Cadet Course spanning for 3 Months. Such courses are Diploma in Applied Science or Deck Watchkeeper. It provides the Cadet Pre-sea Training as well as onboard training of 24 Months. The Cadets learn to load ships, store cargo, handle gear, stationary rigging, and running gear, and learns ship stability, ship maneuvering and ship management and perform a variety of operations and maintenance tasks to preserve the painted surface of the ship.
In an advance stage, a graduate degree in Nautical Science or the Marine Engineering opens avenue in Merchant Navy. Minimum you need to complete class 12th with PCM. There is a age limit of 20 years to both unmarried male as well as female candidates and another five years relaxation is provided to SC/ST. In case of direct entry, candidates should complete class 12 with PCM. For the B.Tech in Mechanical/ Electrical/ Technology, Cadet/ Fifth Engineer/ Junior Engineer posts are open.
