Is it possible join Merchant Navy on Deck side after completing Mechanical Engineering?

Hi,
I'm a Mechanical Engineering graduated from NIT, Allahabad and joined IT in a MNC.

I'm interested to join merchant navy. I want to join deck officer and not as marine engineer (engine side).

Is it possible for me to join on deck side (nautical). If so, what is the procedure to join and which course & college should i be considering?

From internet i got the news that to join as deck side in Merchant Navy, we need to do BSC Nautical Science. Since I'm already graduated, I dont want to do BSC in nautical science - 3 year course.

Is there any 1 year course for graduates.

Please guide me.
Thanks

hi friend,
It is equally true that you have to be graduate of nautical science but there are other ways that you join navy line as a deck cadet. After gaining some experience you will be given the post of deck officer. You can also join merchant navy as a technical engineer .

Dear friend,

You can join the merchant navy on the deck cadet sector as you have engineering graduation degree in mechanical stream.

There are special 1 or 2 years diploma courses to become deck cadet officer in the merchant navy for mechanical engineers.

You can join in the govt or private merchant navy institutes to pursue the cadet course.
After completing that course you will have to go through a mandatory training course in merchant navy and with experience you will get higher post.

There are institutes like T.S Chanakya institute in navi mumbai, MERI(kolkata/mumbai/chennai). these are the top ranked merchant navy institutes in India.

So go for it..

Good luck!

Yes you got right News, for joining in Deck side B.sc (Nautical science) is required.

What can you do is, you have to opt for "Engine Department".

For Getting into Engine Department of Merchant Navy, one has to start career from the post of "Fifth or Junior Engineer" which ultimately lead to Chief Engineer.

Qualification Required: A degree in Marine or Mechanical or electrical Engineering from a recognised Institute. MArine engineering holder will get in directly while Mechanical and Elecrical has to undergone 10 months Pre-Sea Training in MArine engineering, which is either offered by recruiting company or candidate has to born itself.

Eligibility: First class first pass.

Age Limit: 25 years.

Institute Offering Pre-Sea Training:-

There are few good private institute imparting training and various courses to enable youngster to take up a career in sea.

Best Governemnt Institutes:-

T.S. Chanakya Institute: previously called T.S.Rajendra, offers maritime education and training to aspiring navigating officers. Affiliated to the University of Bombay

Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI) : It was earlier known as the directorate of Marine Engineering, offers marine engineering education. Headquartered at Calcutta, it has a branch in mumbai too.

Othen then Government followings are good ones:-

Academy of Maritime Education and Training, chennai.
National Institute of Port Management,Uthandi, Chennai.
Vel's College of Maritime Studies, pallavaram, Chennai.
International Maritime Institute, Greater Noida UP.
Tolani Maritime Institute, Erandawane, Pune.

Scope: Carer in Mechant Navy has never witness such a tremendous prospects. There are 40% shortage of Chief Engineers and Captains in shipping industry. Whereas for junior level engineers and officers it is 30%. An the rate of growth of Shipping Industry in India is almost 22%.

Since Shipping Industry or Trade Or Merchandise comprises 95% of the whole World's Trade. MErchant NAvy has become one stop solution for Lucaretive and properous career.

The money is good in this field. You could start off with as much as Rs 20,000 per month starting and work up to 1.5 - 2 lakh a month.

If you work for foreign vessels then well you will earn in dollars. Your gross salary can be as much as Rs. 4 lakh a month at the top of your career. You are usually allowed 4-months leave every year. Items like imported liquor, cigarettes are all duty-free on board.

So, it is clear now that apart from "Deck Department" "Engine Department" has also promissing oppurtunities. An since you are an engineer from NIT (a reputed institute) chances are bright for you

Hey my friend there is not at all such condition that you have to opt for Engine Side as a marine engineer. If you are willing to join as Deck side then here is the possible process--

First of all you need to take admission in Deck Cadet course in which there is 1 yr pre-sea course and 18 months sea experience on board.

The minimum educational qualification to join Deck Cadet course is 12th passout with min 55% marks in PCM OR BSc. with phy as a subject in any one of the yr and also minimum 55% marks in final year. I think you are definetly eligible to take admission as Deck Cadet because you are graduate. For admission you can appear in entrance test conducted by IMU(forms available in the month of may). After this entrance you can take admission in govt or private institutions.

On completion 1 yr off board course and 18 months sea experiance you would be provided with Bsc(Nautical Science Degree). On further sea experiance you may promoted as first, second and third officer. On further experiance( from 5 to 8yr) you may get promotion upto Captain( average salary 5000- 8000$).
Good Luck
