Tripura University came into existence in the year 1987 as a Public University with the objective of meeting the higher education requirements of the people of Tripura. The university was conferred with the status of Central University for the excellence in education shown by the university. Before the establishment of this university, there were only few colleges in the state of Tripura, most of these colleges were affiliated to the Calcutta University, and Tripura University began its functions to meet the higher education aspirations of the people on the auspicious day of the Birthday of the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi.

At present a number of general degree colleges, professional degree colleges, technical colleges and colleges offering various PG courses are affiliated to the university. A number of government and private colleges are offering education in the state of Tripura with affiliation from the Tripura University. Tripura University is also engaged in various research activities in different branches. The university also offers placement assistance to its students through placement cell functioning under the university.
