Test Of English as a Foreign Language normally called as TOEFL is a widely accepted English language test conducted by Educational Testing Service (ETS). The TOEFL score is accepted by around 8,000 colleges and universities across 130 counties. Now the TOEFL score become on of the admission criteria for the student to get an admission in the foreign universities.

Structure of TOEFL

TOEFL can be of two types, the internet based (IBT) and the paper based test (PBT). There is no difference in the validity of the score whether it is generated by the IBT or PBT.

TOEFL internet based test consist of the following sections

Speaking: 6 tasks (6 questions)

Writing: 2 tasks (2 questions)

Listening: 6–9 passages (each containing 5–6 questions)

Reading: 3–5 passages (each containing 12–14 questions)

If the areas are not avail to the internet facilities, ETS conduct paper based test and the areas are,

Listening (30 – 40 minutes)

Reading Comprehension (55 minutes)

Structure and Written Expression (25 minutes)

Writing (30 minutes)

The total duration of the test vary from 160- 200 minutes and the score of an individual can have the range 0-200 for the IBT and 310-677 for the PBT.

Eligibility Criteria

For taking TOEFL there are no restrictions and requirements. There are no requirements on age, qualification etc. for taking this exam. One can appear any time for the exam when they want to take.

How to Apply?

There are different ways one can register for the exam. One can apply by online by visiting the TOEFL supported by ETS. There is an option called Online Registration. They can also register by mail by downloading the format from the TOEFL site. Then the filled form should send to the prescribed address. The candidates can call the number 0124 4147700 for registering by phone. In the country there are many TOEFL resource centers, the aspirants can visit such centers for direct registration. This will also allow them to get more details about t the examination. He candidates must pay the test fee at the time of registration, for India it is US$ 165 and vary according to the country.

Important Dates

One can take the test through out the year. TOEFL allows the candidates to choose their time and dates and also their desired nearby centers. Generally people taking this test on the month of September to December and can fix any time between the working hours of Monday to Friday.

Cutoff

Different colleges have different cutoff percentage for TOEFL. It depends upon the country and the university the student is opting for. For a IBT test the average valid score for getting admission in the recognized universities ranges between 61 to 109.

Score Validity

The candidates can use the TOFEL score for two yeas that is it is valid for two years.
