The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is conducted jointly by all Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in the country and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. The examinations are usually held in the month of February every year and the results are declared in March. The candidates who have Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Technology or Pharmacy or Master’s degree in any branch of Science, Mathematics, Computer Application, or Statistics can apply for GATE.

Eligibility criterion for GATE

The categories of candidates who can apply for GATE are listed below.

  • Candidate should have Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, Engineering, Architecture or Pharmacy. Final year students can also apply for GATE.
  • Candidate should have Master’s degree in any branch of Science, Mathematics, Computer Application, or Statistics. Final year students in these streams too can also apply for GATE.
  • Candidates who have obtained a professional degrees equivalent to B.Tech or B.E recognised by UPSE or AICTE can also apply. The usual courses are AME by ICE(I) and AMIE by IE(I).
  • Candidates who have passed Dual degree program or 5-year Integrated Masters degree program or 4-year Integrated Master’s Degree Program (after B.Sc) in Engineering or Technology can also apply for GATE.

For admission to post graduate courses with MHRD scholarship a weightage of 70% is given to GATE score. The scholarship awarded by GATE is valid for a period of 2 years for the Master’s degree programs. The candidates who have qualified are eligible for Junior Research Fellowships awarded by CSIR Laboratories. In some institutions it is mandatory to mention the GATE qualification for admission for various post graduate courses.  Presently many government companies seek GATE score for applying for various posts in different departments. One of the eligibility criterions to apply for the post of a Scientist in many government organizations is a GATE score.

Important Dates

The date of GATE exam is in the month of February. The candidates can collect the application form online from fourth week of September to third week of October. The candidates can collect the application forms from various GATE office counters. The last date of submitting the filled application form online is last week of October. The candidates can send it through post or by hand till November first week. During the mid week of March the results are declared.

There are various centres all over India for GATE. The candidates can find the result in particular websites of IIT or IISc.
