Biomedical Engineering is a diverse field of engineering that integrates mathematics, medicine and science to solve medical and biological problems thereby making the world as a healthier place to live.  The challenges created by the complexity and diversity of living systems require imaginative, knowledgeable and creative people working in teams of engineers, scientists and physicians and even business folk to enhance, restore and monitor normal body function.

Professionals in this field need a strong foundation in more traditional disciplines of engineering like chemical, mechanical and electrical engineering. Most UG biomedical engineering programs need students to take a core curriculum of traditional engineering courses. However, biomedical engineers will be expected to integrate their skills in engineering with their understanding of the complexity of biological systems for improving their medical practice. Therefore, biomedical engineering should be trained in life sciences as well.

Courses in Biomedical Engineering:

To find jobs in the field of biomedical engineering, a well-rounded course of study at the high schools level is essential since this will enable the candidates to pursue Bachelor of Technology course in biomedical engineering. The minimum educational qualification required to pursue a B. Tech in Biomedical engineering is physics, chemistry and biology subjects at the higher secondary level. Most programs need courses in engineering design, transport phenomenon, thermodynamics, biomaterials, systems and signals, dynamics and statistics, instrumentation and circuits design, electronics, general physics, organic chemistry and inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, physiology and biology. Many engineering and science courses include laboratory experience to offer students with hands on real world applications. Following this, the biomedical engineer might assume an entry level engineering position in hospital or even a sales position for biotechnology and biomaterials company. Many biomedical engineers would seek a graduation level training in biomedical engineering or in a related engineering field. A PG or doctoral degree offers the biomedical engineers with greater opportunities in research and development irrespective of whether such work in a government setting, academic or industrial setting.

Career prospects in biomedical engineering:

According to the Indian Bureau of Labor statistics, biomedical engineers have excellent job prospects and earning potential in the coming years. Most of these professionals can find job placements in medical supplies and manufacturing industry. Other large employing industries include surgical hospitals, general medical hospitals, scientific and research development services, medical and pharmaceutical manufacturing firms. Professionals in the field of biomedical engineering often make use of their medicine and engineering background for performing a coordinating role. They are also employed in corporate hospitals for selection, handling and maintenance of sophisticated equipment in addition to building of customized equipment for special needs. They can also take up teaching as their profession by joining as faculty members for which they should complete PG and Ph. D in biomedical engineering.

Government jobs in Biomedical Engineering:

Government positions in the field of biomedical engineering involve product testing as well as establishment of safety standards for devices. Professionals in the field of biomedical engineering can find job placement in research organizations engaged in biomedical research. Recently, National Institute of Technology invited applications from eligible candidates for the positions of professor, assistant professor and associate professor for biomedical engineering branch.
