he Common Law Admission Test in an entrance exam that is carried out in the nationwide level for the admission of students into the Law Universities throughout the country. This exam is considered to be vital for students who aspire to pursue law as a profession. The CLAT exam for the year 2011 will be carried out for the admission of students into the undergraduate courses for the 11 National Universities of Law. The same is also conducted for admission into the LLM course.

Basic Eligibility for CLAT

  • Undergraduate Programmes (LLB) – Candidates who wish to join this course must have a pass in class 12 with a minimum score of 50 percent marks. Those candidates who are going to write their finals are suitable to apply for this course too.
  • Postgraduate Programmes (LLM) – As to get admission into this course, the students are required to have a LLB degree. The certification should be from a recognized University. The students must have achieved a minimum of 50 percent marks. It is also possible for students who are appearing for their finals to apply for this course. But, their admission will be provisional until they submit their results with the stipulated marks.

Qualifying for CLAT Exam

To apply for this exam, the candidates need to have a pass in class XII or its equivalent. They must have a score of minimum 50 percent. A relaxation of 5% is given to students of the reserved categories and for people who are disabled.

Age Qualification for CLAT

Candidates who are applying for the graduate program should not be above 20 years of age. An upper age limit relaxation of 2 years is granted for students of the reserve categories as well as students who are disabled. No age limit is mentioned in case of students who wish to go for the postgraduate program.

Who can apply for CLAT?

All permanent residents of India are eligible to apply for this exam. In case of foreign nationals, if they have a valid Indian passport, they can apply for the CLAT exam. If the parents or grandparents of the students were permanent Indian residents as defined by the laws of the Indian Act 1935 and was not a citizen of any other country at that time, they can apply for the exam. Spouses of people of Indian origin or a citizen of India are also eligible to apply for the CLAT exam. The candidates should have cleared their final exam prior to their submission of application.

Eligibility for the Foreign Nationals/NRI/PIO for CLAT

Foreign nationals shall not be allowed to appear for the CLAT 2011 exam. Those who desire to apply for any of the courses that are offered by the universities of law that are taking part in the exam should get in touch with the concerned university directly. However, if these people have a valid OCI or PIO card, they will have parity with NRIs in the educational sector. NRI candidates or Candidates who are sponsored by NRI’s must cite their category in the application. The admittance of these candidates will be determined according to their merit.
