Indian Engineering Service Exam is conducted by Union Public Service Commission for filling up the vacancies of engineers in various government departments. This exam consists of objective as well as subjective papers. Graduation in engineering is the minimum qualification required to appear for the exam. Candidates can make use of online facility to apply for the exam.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for IES exam, one should obtain any of the following educational qualification

  • B.E/B.Tech degree from any University approved by University Grants Commission or from any institution established under the Act of Parliament.
  • Pass marks in Section A and Section B examination held by Institution of Engineers (India)
  • Degree/Diploma in Engineering from any approved foreign University
  • Pass marks in Graduate Membership Examination held by Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India)
  • Pass marks in Part II and III/Sections in Associate Membership Examination held by Aeronautical Society of India
  • Pass marks in Graduate Membership Examination held by Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers
  • M.Sc or equivalent degree with Radio Engineering, Wireless Communication, Radio Physics or Electronics as main subjects

The age of the candidates who are applying for the exam should be between 21 and 30 years. However, upper age limit specified for government servants in relevant category is 35 years.

Objective Paper

Category I

  • General Ability Test - Part A – General English, Part B – General Studies
  • Civil Engineering Paper I
  • Civil Engineering Paper II

Category II

  • General Ability Test - Part A – General English, Part B – General Studies
  • Mechanical Engineering Paper I
  • Mechanical Engineering Paper II

Category III

  • General Ability Test - Part A – General English, Part B – General Studies
  • Electrical Engineering Paper I
  • Electrical Engineering Paper II

Category IV

  • General Ability Test - Part A – General English, Part B – General Studies
  • Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering Paper I
  • Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering Paper II

General Ability Test consists of total 60 questions which are divided equally among Part A and Part B. A total of 100 marks are there for this section. Total 240 questions are evenly distributed among Paper I and Paper II having duration of 2 hours each. Each of these papers carries a total of 200 marks. Candidates should be vigilant while answering questions as they can lose 1/3 marks for each incorrect answer.

  • Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering Paper II

Paper I and Paper II carries a total of 200 marks each. Time allocated for each paper is 3 hours. Candidates should give their answers neatly as they can lose 5% marks for illegible handwriting.

Application Procedure

Candidates should apply for IES exam through the official website of Union Public Service Commission. They should read the instructions given on website and enter the details into the online form accordingly. They should make the payment of application fee through demand draft, credit card or debit card as per the instruction given on website. They should submit the form online and take the print out of submitted form for future reference.
