Engineering graduates in streams such as Civil engineering, Mechanical engineering, Electronics engineering and Electronics and Telecommunication engineering and M.Sc holders in streams like Electronics, Wireless Communication, and Radio Engineering can apply for Engineering Services Examination (ESE) conducted by UPSC. Those who have cleared Graduate Membership Examination are also eligible. Selection of eligible candidates to engineering services is done through a written test and personality test.

Eligibility Criteria for UPSC ESE 2013

The main eligibility criteria’s to apply for UPSC Engineering Services Exam is as follows –

• A graduate degree in engineering is essential from any of the recognized institutes or universities in any of the streams like Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering and Electrical Engineering.
• Those candidates who have passed Section A and Section B of the Institution of Engineers Examinations are also eligible to apply for this exam.
• Candidates qualifying the Graduate Membership Examination organized by the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers in India are also eligible.

Apart from this, those candidates who possess a Master of Science (M.Sc) degree in any of the below mentioned streams can also apply –

• Electronics
• Wireless Communication
• Radio Engineering
• Radio physics

The age limit for candidates to attend this exam is 21-30 years. It is also compulsory for candidates to remain physically fit as per the specified physical standards prescribed to attend this exam.

Exam Pattern for UPSC ESE 2013

The plan of the UPSC ESE examination includes two parts –

• Part 1 – Written Examination
• Part 2 – Personality Test

The written examination is further divided in to sections –

• Section 1 – Objective Model Questions
• Section 2 – Conventional Papers

Objective model section includes questions on general ability and concerned engineering stream. General ability includes 100 questions each from the sessions of General Studies and General English. A time limit of 2 hours will be allowed to complete the session. A total of 400 questions will be asked from engineering stream. Time allotted for the completion of the session is 4 hours.

Section 2 – Conventional papers will include questions relating to the specific stream of specialization. The questions will be divided in to two parts and each part will consist of 200 questions. A composite time of 2 hours is given to complete the session. It is compulsory for candidates to obtain the specified cut off percentage in both sections to qualify.

Those who qualify written exam need to attend Part 2 – Personality Test. The personality test is organized to evaluate a candidate leadership skills, intellectual curiosity, practical application capability, integrity of character, mental and physical energy and other social qualities.
