What to do after class 12th to go in merchant navy?

Career in Merchant Navy can be pursued either as an officer or a rating in mainly two specialized fields, i.e. Marine Engineering and Nautical (deck).

Following streams of entries (Pre-Sea courses) are available to plus 2 passed students in the Government as well as in private training institutions:

3 year degree course in Nautical Science
4 year degree course in Marine Engineering
3 month course for Deck Cadets

Direct entry to Merchant Navy is also possible - students who have completed their 12th with PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) are eligible to join as Deck Cadets

Make sure that you have pursued physics, chemistry and mathematics in your 12th standard. Also make sure you get a first class in the same. You will need to appear for the various entrance exam like OPENNET, IIT-JEE etc.

After 12th you can go for merchant navy. you can appear for the IIT-JEE and on the basis of the rank you can go for the following fields:

a) Nautical Officer – 3 year B.Sc. (Natural Sciences). The candidate should be physically fit (as per Merchant Shipping Rules) 6/6 vision, unimpaired color vision.

b) Engineer Officer – 4 year Marine Engineering degree course. Candidate should be physically fit as per Merchant Shipping Rules.

there are many institutions which provide merchant navy course....where u study and simultaneously get the job
you just have to fill the form of those institutes and send it and sit in the entrance exam .........and qualify then to get the addmission....

there are two joinings

1.INDIAN NAVY BUT ITS THROUGH TOUGH PROCESS
2.MERCHANT NAVY ITS TOO EASY TO JOIN.

In Merchant Navy, major tasks performed are in three basic areas of a ship. The Deck, the Engine and the Saloon Department. There are thus, many career options that are available for any youngster who has dreams to join the merchant navy. The deck officers include the captain, chief officer, second officer, third officer and other junior officers. The engine department consists of the chief engineer, second engineer, third engineer, fourth engineer, electrical officer and junior engineers. The service department manages the kitchen, laundry and other services.

Prominent institutes conducting courses in this field are TS Chanakya, Mumbai and Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI), in Kolkata and Mumbai.

As you have completed your 12th, you can apply for naval exams. For, Merchant Navy you can the entrance exam of IMI(i.e. International Maritime Institute ) in Noida. Its a real good institute approved by DGCA and you also get your sponsorship from shipping companies like IPL(Indian Pacific Liner), Singapore and many more.
The exam for the same is aptitude and basic maths followed by an interview.

How to get into Merchant Navy after 12. My son is now giving his XII exams (Science) in March 2011 and we live in Dubai. What is the procedure for NRI students. Since we will be coming to India in April can I collect the form from Chennai for his IMU entrance exam and he can continue his course for pre-sea in chennai.

Yes, you are eligible to become Merchant navy after doing 12th

You have to apply for JEE(Joint Entrance Exam) the exam is conducted by UPSC(union public service commission).

* Candidates should complete 12th standard from a recognized institute
* Candidates should study physics,maths and chemistry at 12th
* Candidates should get 60% at 12th.
* Candidates should have the age limit within 19 to 23 years of age.
* Unmarried male candidates only can appear for this exam.
* You should be physically fit.
