How to join the National Defense Academy?

The UPSC carries out an entrance exam every 6 months for the admission of candidates into the NDA. Candidates who clear the written test will then be called in for a multi round interview comprising of psychology tests as well as group tasks. This will be carried out by the Service Selection Board (SSC).Candidates who wish to become pilots will be required to go through the Pilot Aptitude Battery Test. Those candidates who get selected in this round will be sent for a through medical checkup. Subsequent to this, a merit list will be prepared on the basis of the final list of cadets. Those who score the sufficient marks as to match the available vacancies will be sent a call letter from the academy.

In fact, out of the total number of candidates, 10,000 will be invited for the psychology test and interview. Out of this approximately 300-350 candidates will get entrance into the academy.

Courses offered at NDA

The 3 year course at the Academy will include conventional subjects that are taught at the university level – BA, B.Sc, Computer science etc. In addition to this, they will also be given training on basic military sciences.

In the first two years, the cadets will be given training on all three wings and on the final year they will be given further training on the wing they have chosen. Some of the areas where cadets will be given training include:

  • Firing
  • Horsemanship
  • Military Strategies
  • Para Gliding
  • Physical Training
  • Rock Climbing
  • Sailing

After the successful completion of their training, the cadet will receive a university degree. Their certification will have an affiliation to the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi. They wish be sent to the training establishments of the service they opted for. The academies are:

  • Army cadets- They will be sent to the Indian Military Academy (IMA) at Dehra Dun
  • Air Force cadets – They will be sent to the Air Force Academy at Hyderabad
  • Naval cadets – They will be sent to the training ships.

Eligibility Criteria for joining NDA

The basic eligibility needed by an aspirant to appear for the NDA exam is a pass in class 12. The certification must be from a University or Board that is recognized. Those who are appearing for their finals are also eligible to apply. The candidates are required to be unmarried males between the ages of 16 ½ and 19.

Nationality Requirements

Candidates must be a citizen of India or a subject of Bhutan.

Those who are subjects of Nepal or are Tibetan refugees that came to India prior to the 1st of January 1962 can also apply.

People of Indian origin who have migrated from countries such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, Uganda, Kenya and the United Republic of Tanzania are eligible to apply for the NDA exam too.

These candidates must make sure that they submit a certificate of eligibility from the government of India. This certification will, nonetheless, be unnecessary in the case of candidates who belong to the Gorkha community of Nepal.

How to obtain the Admission Form of NDA

Candidates can apply for this exam through the online and offline methods. Candidates who wish to submit their form online can do so by means of the official website of the UPSC. Instructions on how to fill the form will be available in the website. Those who wish to submit their forms online can get the applications from designated post offices in the country. The price of this form is Rs. 20/-. This form can be made use of only once for one exam.

The candidates will get the admit card after the commission receives the application. It is also possible for the candidates to download their admit card from the formal website of the UPSC. The candidates are recommended to keep an eye on all employment newspapers as well as other newspapers for the admission notification.

How to submit an application for NDA

Candidates who seek admission into the NDA must send their applications to the Secretary, Union Public Service Commission, New Delhi. Candidates may make use of the original form that has been published in the newspapers or print out their details on the proper format of the application on an A4 paper (Single Side). As long as the format is correct, the candidates may also use printed copies of the Application. Aspirants who have appeared for this exam previously will not be considered for this exam. Prior to sending the application, the candidates must makes certain that they have super scribed ‘APPLICATION FOR NATIONAL ACADEMY EXAMINATION’ on the top of the envelope.

Selection Process of NDA

The selection procedure into the NDA is separated into 3 phases. They are:

  • A written exam that is carried out by the Union Public Service Commission.
  • As to assess the potential of the candidate to become an officer, an interview will be conducted by the Service Selection Board.
  • To assess the physical health of the candidates, a medical test will be carried out by the Service Medical Board.

Scheme of the Examination

The subjects that will be included in the written examination, the allotted time and the maximum marks are given below:

  • Mathematics - This paper will have duration of 2 1/2 hours. The maximum mark that is allotted is 300.
  • General Ability - This paper will have duration of 2 1/2 hours. The maximum marks that are allotted are 600.

Both these papers will have a total of 900 marks. The papers will be of the objective type. The question paper of the NDA exam will be in English.

Syllabus for Entrance Examination

  • The first paper of the exam will be mathematics. The maximum marks for this subject is 300.
  • The second paper will be on general ability. It is divided into 2 parts – English and General Knowledge. The former paper will carry 200 marks and the latter 400 marks. The GK part will include questions on Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography and Current events.

Additional Information

The NDA entrance exam will be generally carried out in the months of April & September. The training period is for a period of 3 years.

The aspirants will be obliged to give their preference for the service they wish to join. Nonetheless, the final decision will be made by the academy on the basis of their rank in the merit list. The candidates should first of all select between the National Defense Academy and the Naval Academy. If the NDA is the first choice of the candidates, they will they have to choose from the three services. This is same in the case of students who opt for the Naval Academy.
